I was rather charmed by the story of Duke University basketball player Erin Mathias, who designed this outfit for her coach Joanne McCallie. You can read all the details here.

I do hope the university doesn't mind that I grabbed their photo from Twitter. As you can see, my attempt to capture the event from my television screen left a bit to be desired.

Basketball coaches are a rather fashionable bunch--I'm delighted to say--so no wonder that I've become quite the fan, particularly of the women's game. (Somehow this old British chap has lucked into making his home in a women's basketball heaven on earth.) And I must add, huzzahs to design for a good cause!

As for young Erin, the emerging designer, one of my favorite details from her story is that she recruited her teammates to model her first collection. You can find her work on her website, here.Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-11795959956988790152018-01-31T16:54:00.000-05:002018-01-31T16:56:40.499-05:00Storybook Charm....Scoopy Doo Gelato

Here's a wonderful gent, looking as if he might be a hero plucked from the pages of a beloved childhood story. Or, as I noted in my initial Instagram post (because, dear reader, an old dog CAN learn new tricks), it might be that the mural behind him reminds me of childhood days spent in my beloved English countryside.

Whatever, you might by now be sighing at this aged chap's rambles. Instead, I implore you, take note of the mix--a floral pattern, a bit of a blouson about the top, the belt, the trousers--and see if it doesn't bring to mind the dashing Errol Flynn.Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-55266069498192346082018-01-27T21:31:00.000-05:002018-01-27T21:40:49.447-05:00@billysoundtrack....Five Points

It has always amused me to think that the footwear associated with the American preppy was actually an invention of fishermen in Norway. In 1936, when G.H. Bass became the first company to mass market the "Weejun" loafer, they were not naming it after an exotic Native American tribe, as many have wrongly believed. They were jazzing up "Norwegian," I suppose. G.H. Bass also jazzed up the shoe with a horizontal strap across the vamp. Before long, clever young fellows discovered the decorative cutout provided just enough space for a penny.
Ah, to be young and stylish...to have both friends and pink sneakers...to sport equally well a ladylike collar and a crossbody bag. Is it any wonder that I ran as foolishly as Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short combined to snap a photo of these three friends? The darling young woman on the far right even provided me with the source of her cropped plaid trousers: RomweMaxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-69472391775607776542018-01-15T13:23:00.000-05:002018-01-15T13:23:15.835-05:00Betsy....Teal & Those Tights!

Her fabulous tights were the first thing to catch my eye, though there's no arguing that Betsy is striking from head to toe. I confess: I immediately thought of master scribbler Cy Twombly when I saw those tights (whose artistic panache and baseball-inspired name I have long envied). Perusing this image later in the day, I was also delighted to discover that her skirt rather matched Drip on Main's umbrellas that you see in the background.

Lovely Betsy, you'll not be surprised to learn, is also an accomplished creative. Perhaps you have enjoyed some of her work. Indeed, I have.Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-67154020804771365772018-01-13T10:52:00.000-05:002018-01-13T10:52:23.941-05:00Mario....Saturday Stroll

The coat, the patterns, the colours, the cap--marvelous!--and this fellow purported to be only running an errand in this stylish attire. Brilliant sunshine, indeed, yet one cannot denty: It has been rather chilly these last few days. All the more reason, I say, to marry fashion and function. I admired this young woman's layers and cheery backpack....and that she'd remember to lend a layer to her four-legged friend.Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-6612499627811493322018-01-06T14:17:00.001-05:002018-01-06T14:44:45.279-05:00Venturing Forth.....Greetings, 2018

A fabulous coat and an eye for snappy images--what better way to launch my return to work, I ask? After a sabbatical, I'm eager to get back to my research. During my retreat to a remote island (where fashion, dare I say, was optional), I understand something called the Instagram has taken off. Thus, I will post my findings there as well as here, and do hope to encounter my fellow fashion anthropologists, style enthusiasts, and cheerful dwellers of fair Columbia, S.C. My heavens, it's good to be back. And doesn't this young woman's style warm your heart?Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-45602621092571850942015-01-30T06:25:00.000-05:002015-02-02T08:31:14.195-05:00Amy....Soda City Market

I'd delighted that our citizens can enjoy a year-round farmers' market--and even more delighted by the intrepid folk who shop there on winter Saturdays. Take a glance to your right at the number of posts I've managed in 2015 and you'll quickly divine how well I'm progressing with my New Year's resolution: Post to blog every day. On this last week of January, thank heavens for these lovely young women--and photographer Molly Harrell who provided these images. Perhaps I might get on track before 2016.
Summer, pictured above, is a display manager for Anthropologie and a Savannah College of Art and Design graduate, or as I discovered one could say (rather jauntily), a "SCAD grad."
These women are all at work, at the newish Anthropologie store in Trenholm Plaza. And here's a third young woman, Katie, wearing clothes from the shop I assume. I'm rather fond of the way they put things together there, the windows in particular. How fortunate I was to spy this stylish man and his coat while grocery shopping. Indeed, it was enough to inspire me to get back to my work on this blog. I thought his coat made him look like an admiral of the high seas. In fact, I was not too far adrift: He found his coat, he told me, at the Army-Navy surplus store on Main Street in Columbia.Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-75836869038055472642014-11-22T17:19:00.001-05:002014-11-22T17:20:36.698-05:00Whimsy & Colour....Anthropologie

I encountered this charming lass at Anthropologie in Columbia, a new retail spot that--given it's name--I felt I had to see right away. (Indeed, I'm glad I did, for I am at last inspired to add to this blog.) The young lady's attire fit the mood of the store perfectly--festive and whimsical, with a bit of an edge. Perhaps you can't tell, but her braids were highlighted with a pretty shade of pink. And there just above her knee and just below her hemline, on her stocking, you'll note a cat's face peeking out. Fabulous!Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-89405649201916073912014-10-26T14:42:00.001-04:002014-10-26T14:43:32.994-04:00S.C. While there was a decided German theme going on at Soda City Market on Main Street yesterday, I was more taken with the look you see above than with the traditional St. Pauli-Girl-meets-Pippi-Longstocking costumes that were plentiful (and quite adorable, no question about it).

Likewise, I eschewed the traditional bratwurst in favor of these....
Overjoyed to be back in Columbia (Aunt Dahlia would be pleased to know), I ventured out to the Saturday morning market on Main Street. I was charmed immediately by this woman's combination of patterns....and only hope that my stalking her from booth to booth was not unnerving for her.

A block further, and I happened across a lovely collection of vintage clothing. Best I could gather through casual eavesdropping, the stylish beauty on the left is the proprietress and the gentleman on the right was interested in purchasing the plaid sport coat.
Also at this tent--which was a bit of an open air fashion museum--I spied this extraordinary coat....
Then, a pretty young lady invited me join her merry band at The Publick House to watch the U.S. challenge Germany. I decided to pay more careful attention to how fans were attired. Here's a little of what I saw. The group, above, is utterly charming, no? Here's a closer, though blurry shot. (Drat the low light, but I suppose an advantage for those skipping out of work for long lunches.) Is there significance to the bandana? Or was he adding some red to his white and blue?

This photo in today's Los Angeles Times inspired me to post, for if the U.S. Senate can manage to agree to bring back Seersucker Day, surely it's time for me to resurrect my will to blog.

I've written about this day before....which in its infinite wisdom, the Senate decided to squash a couple of years ago....lest it make them seem unproductive. Indeed. One assumes that they have finally realized that puckered fabric is not the problem.

I found a fun, visual history of seersucker, here, on the Haspel website. Have a mint julep and enjoy!

And, lest you think that I've ignored my work in order to behave like a member of Congress--watching the telly, eating bonbons and starting pointless debates--let me assure you: My hiatus was owing to a research trip to Peru to study Andean hats. More on that soon!

Oh, and by the way, the gentleman standing second from right is the incomparable Senate Chaplain Barry Black. He is a marvelous orator I've had the privilege to work alongside. If you ever have the opportunity to hear him speak, do take it.Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-87865615732405959652014-05-17T15:00:00.000-04:002014-05-17T15:00:16.346-04:00Trim Suit....S.C. My companion at the opening reception for the S.C. Book Festival was rather taken by this man and his slim-fitting suit. She urged me to snap the handsome chap's photo (and as a bonus, I inadvertently captured the woman to his right in the entrancing floor-length floral number).

My charming date (in the black dress) played it cool as she insisted I take this photo and the one below. The woman in the striking blue dress, it turned out, was the well-suited man's pretty wife.
And here's one more angle of the fellow, who I later learned has been photographed for the cover of one of the books featured at the festival. The entire gathering has been a delight thus far, and I've met a charming writer of children's books--Kami Kinard--who hails from Camden, I believe. I also chatted with another Camden-connected writer, the nephew of my dear friend Reid, the always-funny Christopher Buckley. Perhaps, I will see you there today or tomorrow? Do wear something interesting, for I'd love to take a photo!Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2716144344595418028.post-13542685121938287172014-05-07T18:34:00.000-04:002014-05-07T18:35:22.876-04:00Cortado with a View....Drip in 5 Points

The view from my table at Drip a few days ago--what fun and well done, fellow Columbians!Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308847884289453331noreply@blogger.com0
