Had I spied a garden ornament bandit in broad daylight on Saluda Avenue? I looked again. It was the mischievous Michael Krajewski--no bandit, but a bit of a prankster. He appeared, once again, to be wearing a lady's item of clothing, this time a silk neckerchief. Who knows why.

Gorgeous Sunday....Five Points

Yesterday was the sort of Sunday that demands one break out one's fancy sunglasses, journey by bicycle, lounge about at sidewalk cafes, and otherwise enjoy the unseasonably gorgeous weather, no? Behind those "Foster Grants" at The Gourmet Shop, I discovered, was music writer Otis Taylor.

A bit further down the sidewalk along Saluda, I found a bike outfitted with stunning accessories....

...and around the corner, the proprietors at work on what will surely be the city's first Irish taco shack. I look forward to wearing my kilt and sombrero here for the grand opening!

Derek....All-Local Farmers' Market

Derek is the most affable chap and I was enthralled by his market-morning ensemble, because it captures the essence of our Columbia "winter". I believe I will adopt this style--a wooly scarf with short trousers and plimsolls. It's just the thing for these balmy February days.

Ah, what would a beer festival be without lederhosen? Sadly lacking, indeed. I did not get close enough to determine if actual leder had been used to make these. In a related aside, do let me help you learn from my mistake: as a young anthropologist, I called these short trousers "leiderhosen" which means, in German, "sad britches". As some football coach, somewhere, has surely said: "there is no 'i' in lederhosen." Most definitely no "i" here--these britches and the chaps wearing them were quite cheerful!

Tribal Necklaces....Beer Festival

Dear reader, I confess: until yesterday, I had never before attended a beer festival. While I expected to discover a new ale or two, I did not expect to discover that beer festival attendees are a bit of a tribe, with their own distinctive clothing and accessories. But it is, in fact, the case. Of most interest to me were the pretzel necklaces, which reminded me somewhat of the adornments worn by Masai tribespeople. Above, you see a man who has festooned himself with fat pretzels and leftover Christmas ribbons.

Here, the size of the necklaces seems to indicate that snacks to go with beer will be required to last some several days, no? Delightful! I like the variety of pretzels these two women chose to use. They were quite good-natured about letting me photograph them.

A modest pretzel necklace pairs well with a bow tie, I think. I could see myself wearing something like this. This handsome young fellow was working, and I liked the way he'd gotten into the spirit of the day.

If like me, you were not in-the-know about this pretzel necklace business, you could redeem yourself by purchasing a kit.

Below, you see a volunteer for Columbia Opportunity Resource with one of the kits. No doubt, she is explaining that the preztels were placed in the ziplock bag by someone with very clean hands.

Were you to assemble one of these kits, I believe you might wind up with something similar to the necklaces these friends were sporting.

Portable snacking is only useful for so long. Eventually, an old fellow just needs to take his pretzels and sit down. I found a spot on the floor in the corner.

I'd like to tell you these are my plimsolls and socks--but no, they belong to my much younger (but just as weary) companion and guide.

Miss Springmaid....Columbia Museum of Art

This attractive young woman would have made Col. Elliott White Springs happy, I dare to venture. Not only was she shapely, but she was also wearing a body-baring ensemble that featured his work. The fabric is covered with images from his rather risque ad campaigns for Springmaid.

The "prince of peek-a-boo advertising" and his naughty ads were the topic of the Columbia Design League's cocktail party/educational program at the museum on Friday night. We were privileged to view a delightful documentary produced by SCETV...

....which included many anything-but-subtle illustrations, such as the one you see above. I intend to seek out a copy of Springs's book Clothes Make the Man, which I understand was printed in Clinton, S.C., by an old acquaintance of mine. (I know I will like the book for the title, if for no other reason.)

Springs's antics (and Hawaiian shirts) delighted many in the audience--and, no doubt, offended some. After the film, a panel discussed the ads and the question of taste. (For the record, I object to good taste whenever it's the impetus for dull fashion.) One natty fellow wondered if we'd one day be discussing American Apparel ads in the same way. If you care to comment, I'd be curious to know what you think.

The show-stealers, for me, were the former Miss Springmaids....

The women not only attended the event, but also told their stories to the audience and signed autographs.

I do enjoy my membership in the Columbia Design League--and thank them for putting together an entertaining evening!

This adorable woman delighted me with her whimsical knit hat and tangle of yarn. She was among the crafty folk enjoying a cheery time at the Columbia Museum of Art this evening...the official name, I believe, is Craft.Bar.Happy.Hour.

As you can see, some of the crafters were getting considerably "happier" than others.

Laura....Drip Coffee

An open table at Drip Coffee--or was it? A purse with a beguiling strip of orange on the strap and a bit of cash suggested otherwise. To my delight, the table was occupied by none other than lovely Laura.

Laura provides makeup and wardrobe on the sets of movies and television programs (and is probably cursing me at this very moment for using my camera's flash in the photo above). She was in Columbia last week to apply makeup to the faces of would-be American presidents. A world traveler, Laura included a number of interesting items in this ensemble--a studded leather jacket....

...this souvenir necklace from a recent trip to Dubai (yes, that's the Burj Al Arab, "burj" being the word for "tower" in Arabic, a tidbit I picked up on my own recent trip to Dubai)...

...and these grommet-and-leather jeans. Laura's jeans may be daring, but the lady is far too discreet to offer any insight into complexion issues of the election. She assured me, however, that the candidates no longer wear powdered wigs (though after seeing this fellow, I am not entirely convinced).

Harriett is one of those stunning women you always notice. Last night at a 701 Center for Contemporary Art opening, her beauty was almost upstaged by the stunning collar on her jacket. It reminded me a bit of Queen Elizabeth's ruff--though Harriett's strikes me as much more fantastic, because hers is made from zippers. Yes, metal zippers!

It had been while since I'd last seen my Camden friends. What a treat. Reid looked dapper as always, donned in his favourite type of trouser--breeks. And May is always so well put together. On this day, she was wearing a knit tunic in a mod graphic print, something she found in a new Charleston boutique. I also liked her skinny jeans and boots, and the bright yellow bag, bringing a bit of sunshine on an overcast day. She seems to have a knack for that!

When I saw Cal earlier today, I assumed he was sporting short trousers because of the warm weather. But no--his motives were far more interesting than that! It seems Cal was tallying the inventory of the humidor at The Gourmet Shop. The room is rather muggy, with 75 percent humidity--comfortable for cigars, not as much for delightful Cal. I did enjoy our chat at Drip and look forward to seeing him again soon. Perhaps he will give me a tour of this humidor; I rather envision the cigars sitting in their own recliners watching tiny televisions.

No that's not a ladder covered with Christmas lights. It is, in fact, a rather long-legged gentleman wearing a pair of illuminated trousers. I encountered him within the confines of the VIP zone at Columbia's New Year's Eve celebration on Main Street. He seemed to be making hats from balloons, or something along those lines. No idea where one finds such trousers, for his height seems to exceed the capacity of even the most ambitious Big & Tall department.

I'd heard there might be a little holiday get together on Main Street last night, so I ventured out--and was rewarded by an encounter with this adorable woman. Heather's look put me in mind of the 1920s, a wonderful decade to recall when one is in the mood to kick up one's heels. Her dress, she told me, she nabbed at Revente's Last Call for a scandalous $25. Her shoes are Dolce & Gabbana from Coplon's--but she assured me she waited to purchase them on sale--which made me think this young lady, while as lovely as Zelda Fitzgerald, might be be a jot more practical.

Could it be? I cleaned and returned my monocle to my right eye. Indeed, the pose was unmistakable. My favourite music writer was, in fact, sitting in Starbucks in this remote corner of eastern North Carolina. It's always a delight to bump into acquaintances from home when one is traveling, no? He was on his way to a family gathering, and I was visiting a farm family I got to know last Christmas during the blizzard of 2010. What is an older gentleman such as myself doing at a tavern on a Monday night, you are justified in wondering. Indeed, a charming young chap had asked me to attend a concert by, I thought I heard him say, Kristi Yamaguchi. Who knew the skater could sing? It was, however, another example of why my friends have urged me to get an ear horn. I was going to hear Rachel Yamagata--and she was quite good. In fact, I am her newest ardent fan--though I have no idea if she can ice skate.

With her boots and ethereal top, I thought this darling young woman was the very picture of bohemian chic. (It is a style, by the way, that I adore, for reasons associated with my days as a rapscallion, which I might be willing to discuss were you to treat me to an Old Fashioned). How appropriate, it turns out, that she works at the boutique named "Bohemian" in Five Points.

She graciously held her arms out so that I could capture the shape of this tunic. Then, to my further delight, she revealed that she and her Bohemian colleagues are regular readers of this humble blog. What an honour for me, indeed!

I met this beautiful, merry woman inside HoFP Gallery on Devine Street. We were both participating in the annual holiday stroll. Janet's whimsical hat delighted me, as did the "under the sea" theme at the gallery, where owner Alice Perritt had outdone herself. One employee was dressed as a jellyfish, wearing a many-tentacled hat I'd like to own myself. Upstairs, a decidedly fit young man was posing as scantily clad King Neptune. And all around, the most wonderful fish sculptures by this artist--the reason, I believe, for the evening's theme.

I bumped into charming Tom Chinn at the All-Local Farmers' Market yesterday. He was reluctant to be photographed, saying he'd just rolled out of bed and tossed something on. I thought he looked marvelous, perfectly attired for Saturday morning errands--and my admiration increases this morning as I loll about on my plush new mattress, an aptly named "Heavenly Bed." Indeed, at this moment, just being dressed and out at all on a weekend morning strikes me as the height of ambition! I believe I will stay put and finish reading Crossing the Heart of Africa, a fascinating account of the rather ambitious Ewart Grogan, who walked across Africa in the early 1900s.

Thanksgiving Traveler....Columbia Airport

I arrived at the Columbia Airport on Thanksgiving Day, returning from a quick jaunt south of the border. While waiting for my trunk, I admired this woman's combination--a lush, furry coat and over-the-knee suede boots--finding it to be a most appealing travel costume.

Yes, dear reader, while you were roasting your native bird and such, I was returning from a brief research mission to Mexico. Among my fascinating discoveries were these bar stools at my hotel's tequila bar--actual Western-style saddles. You might find the horn very useful if you are tempted to over-sample the local spirits. Do I say this from experience? Or perhaps from observation?

Back home in time to enjoy a delicious turkey dinner provided by a thoughtful friend, I ventured out for a walk later to offset my intake and discovered that there may indeed be royalty in the neighborhood--a rather British notion on an all-American day.

Fashion magazines are always making a fuss about the mix--by which they usually mean pairing a Prada skirt (or the like) with a t-shirt from Target. It all seems rather less-than-inspired when one compares it to the mix orchestrated by this young woman. What to make of this ensemble--a lumberjack's shirt, a shiny skirt, and violet plimsolls--other than to say viva la mix! Not only was I delighted by her melange, but I was also thoroughly charmed by her pretty auburn braids. (Try saying "auburn braids" aloud three times, dear reader, and I believe you will hit upon a new tongue twister!)

If you've ever ventured over to the All-Local Farmers' Market, perhaps you've noticed the fun-loving crowd that gathers on the veranda to sip bubbly. On occasion, I am fortunate enough to be invited to join them. Saturday I noticed that Ginger, who always looks splendid, had paired a sheer lace dress with modest black top, leggings and boots. Her handsome rascal of a husband told me she had hand-crocheted the dress--which caused Ginger to laugh heartily.

Once she'd regained her composure, she confessed to me: the dress was an inexpensive item she'd picked up at "one of those stores that caters to young girls." I tip my hat to her for making an excellent selection!

Sally....Nana Bags

It made perfect sense to me that the designer behind Nana would be a winsome young woman, and her coat with the ruffled placket was nearly as adorable as she--and her bags.

Sally displays a knack for combining colour and pattern that made me wish I had enough style and confidence to carry one of these bags myself. Instead, I found myself purchasing one for my old chum Millicent....

Meanwhile, Sally told me that she had not hand-sewn her jacket--but rather purchased it from Urban Threads in Five Points.

As I sit in the White Plains, New York, airport I have been reviewing some photos--and came across one I took nearly a month ago that I still find amusing. This insouciant Italian dog rather reminded me of that all-American canine, Spuds McKenzie.

Traveling Feet....Here, There, Everywhere

Work has required more than a bit of travel lately, and I've found myself in a bit of quandary when it comes to footwear. Do I choose style over comfort, as is my wont? Or do I show my poor feet a bit of mercy? I found myself looking at others' shoes in an effort to refine my approach. Above, you see a pair of charming yet sensible shoes that I spied trodding upon the Ponte Vecchio in Florence.

And here, a rather smart pair of two-toned brogues, worn by a gentleman on an airport shuttle in Philadelphia.

Indeed, the sneaker has been a standby for many an American traveler, and though I've shunned them in days gone by, I may have to reconsider. Above, you see a woman (who happens to live in Columbia!) riding the water taxi in Baltimore; I notice she'd smartened hers by pairing them with a blazer and snappy green phone cover.

And here, a young man from the Ukraine, napping on our train trip across Italy, looking rather fresh with his Addidas striped tennies.

I also encountered an American gentleman (and South Carolina resident) who'd toured three countries--Italy, Kenya, and the United Arab Emirates--crediting his complete comfort to his shoes, a brand called Keen. He also swore that no matter where he went, people stared at his shoes, as if they were the oddest footwear they'd ever seen.

Morgan....Columbia Airport

Oh how I do appreciate a snappily-dressed traveler. The sight of darling Morgan and her fabulous hat almost made my six hour wait yesterday at the Columbia airport worthwhile. Indeed, I had to know more. Morgan told me she couldn't pack the hat, so wearing it seemed the best choice. I admired not only the topper but also the aplomb with which she wore it--as if wearing a hat to the airport were an everyday sort of thing--and well it should be! Morgan had traveled to Aiken to visit her father for his birthday and to attend the steeplechase. She was on her way back to Philadelphia. Such a fortunate father he is, with this sparkling gem of a daughter!

Candy & Costumes....All Hallows' Eve Eve

I took these photographs about a month ago, while on a trip to Baltimore. They were part of a delightful candy store display. (I understand the franchise also staffs outposts in Dubai and Myrtle Beach.) The Halloween holiday weekend seemed a splendid time to post them.

They run the gamut from slightly naughty to sweetly girlish....

.....a solution to any last minute costume quandary as well as a use for excess trick or treat candy, perhaps?

If you have collected a preponderance of Twizzlers and gumballs, I can imagine seeing you out and about in something like this, even next weekend. Indeed, I hope so! (Apologies gentlemen, but the store only featured ladies' attire. Perhaps you might venture a fringed cowboy vest with the stuff.)

Michael....Maple Street

While bicycling over to my friend Millicent's house last week, I happened across my pal Michael, who seems always to be up to something that causes this old gent's eyebrows to lift. This time, he appeared to be wearing a lady's suit jacket with 3/4 length sleeves--an item, he told me, he had in fact purloined from a woman's closet. (Ladies, be warned--lock your closets if Mr. Krajewski is about!)

Not entirely pleased with my haphazard snapshot, Michael insisted on striking a pose, to better show off the ensemble. He told me he'd received a number of compliments (yes compliments, not comments) on the jacket--a look he thinks could catch on with young men around town. We shall see!

Frog King Kwok....Installation

Perhaps if you crossed The Lizard Man of Lee County with local event planners Flock and Rally (the duo behind the Free Times Best Of festivities), you might get something like this installation I happened across while visiting Venice.

It was part of the Venice Biennale, and one of its chief features was the option for visitors to dress up in wacky costumes from a selection of items provided by the artist. Perhaps you will find inspiration for the upcoming costume holiday next week.

The entire display was the work of a chap who calls himself Frog King Kwok (though I find myself wanting to call him Hong Kong Phooey). HRH Kwok has produced thousands of events around the world over the last 30 years.

Here's a photo of his logo, which does bear some resemblance to my favourite character....

I met Ian a few weeks ago, during a show at the Tapp's Building, and once again found myself thinking what a cyclical business fashion can be. No, I am not talking about the return of the Aztec print, though his shirt can make the case for it. I refer to the accessory he's sporting--used for swatting unwelcome visitors long before the world invented handbags. That's right, the caveman's club.

There are many types of clubs in the world--the Japanese kanabo, the Irish shillelagh, and the Zulu knobkerry to name a few. Ian fashions his clubs from tree parts he collects, turning them on a lathe to give form--but at the same time, striving to retain their rustic knottiness. Will these, perchance, catch on as the must-have item for Fall 2011?

Guggenheim Guest....Venice

I stopped over briefly in Venice on my way back to Columbia from a research expedition and found myself lodging mere steps from Peggy Guggenheim's old place, now a museum. Though I never knew the woman well, Peggy and I had met in Venice when I returned her lost dog. She subsequently invited me to her palazzo several times for social gatherings that left me less than fit to paddle my own gondola home. Today, I found this young lady seeking respite during a school field trip. While I was viewing the art collection, she was reading on the terrace that overlooks the Grand Canal. I adored the vivid colour combination, punctuated by the black and white lace-ups. I'd like to think Peggy would have approved.

I had hired a car and headed to the Karen Blixen house on the outskirts of Nairobi, where I was more than a little surprised to hear two people discussing the flora of the Palmetto State. At first, I wondered if I had imbibed one Tusker too many....but indeed, the pair were from Columbia. We gazed at the Ngong Hills together, and the woman seemed beside herself to be reliving the movie Out of Africa. (I must admit, it is one of my favourite movies, from a fashion point of view.) Poor dear, she'd been wearing the same outfit for more than a week--the travel skirt a purchase from the Columbia outpost of Halfmoon Outfitters. A night later, I bumped into them again, at the Lord Delamere Terrace in town. I do hope their subsequent safari to the Masai Mara is a success.

As you may know, I am a tremendous fan of the Columbia Design League's annual recycled trashion show, Runaway Runway. So I was thrilled to happen upon this exhibit of Eco Trash Couture while scurrying through the Atlanta airport. The dress above is made of Target bags....

....and was shown with this amusing coordinated headpiece.

This suit, an homage to the golden era of the flight attendant called "The Environmental Steward-ess", is rather wittily constructed from the pleather hides of discarded Delta airplane seats. This adorable volunteer was there to greet us when I dropped by the gallery with two dashing artist friends in tow. They were insisting I view the current exhibit, Triennial Revisited. I was, as you might imagine, just as eager to view more closely Allison's ensemble. Her scarf, she told me, was a gift from her mother. The boots she snagged at Forever 21. She also volunteered a tip: Allison recommends giving yourself a time limit when you shop the new Forever 21 at the mall. Otherwise, she says, the amount of time you spend there could become ridiculous.

Ah, as if the music were not thrilling enough, I ventured into the lobby of the Koger Center Thursday evening and discovered the woman who makes my heart sing! Even without the good fortune of encountering darling Peg, seen above, I must admit my favourite part of any night at the symphony is intermission--and the chance to see what people are wearing. The event seems to inspire people to add a little something to their everyday attire...Peg topping a floral dress with a fuschia sweater....

...and this pretty lass with her vivid pink scarf vibrating against her cyan hued dress. Delightful. As was this woman's hairstyle.....

....I loved the drama of it. Well done, indeed!

On the Street....Colombia

Yes, dear reader, you are seeing the "o" used twice--and intentionally. I journeyed from our Columbia to Bogota, Colombia, to undertake some research. While there, I explored Colombian street style--to see if a second "o" made for significant differences. The answer? Yes and no. Above, you see a rather unusual Colombian accessory in the city's historic plaza. Juan Valdez would be pleased. You will not find a handbag that can carry quite so much as this llama, though the handbag does hang more nicely on the back of a chair, one supposes.

Meanwhile, this woman making fresh potato crisps at her pushcart could, in her parka and sneakers, fit in here in South Carolina--on a winter's day, of course.

I spotted this fellow outside the Botero museum. I was mesmerized by the interplay of patterns you see above...in the alternating rocks and tiles...and if you will zoom in.....

....also between the gentleman's cap and shirt. Marvelous! As were the Botero paintings....

....which always make me feel as though I owe it to myself to enjoy a good meal. Muchos gracias, Senorita Lisa, for I enjoyed my dinner and my companion at Abasto.

I admired this restaurant's facade and not just because I was hungry. It's located in the charming neighborhood of Usaquen. That's where I also met a charming Bogota native who had, for a while, lived in our very own Columbia, S.C.

Adriana works as a translator, speaks English and Spanish brilliantly, and was dressed in the typical professional fashion for women of the city--where the weather is autumn-like every day of the year and the preferred handbag is a satchel worn across the body.

I was particularly interested in her eye makeup. Had she used masking tape to achieve that band, I found myself wondering aloud. No, she told me she applied it freehand using liquid eyeliner. The oversized ring on her right hand is made of Murano glass, a souvenir from her trip to Venice.

This young woman most definitely stood out at the mall's food court, so I had to ask about her ensemble. She told me it was theme day at the store she manages, The Body Shop.

The store's employees have decided to dress around a theme every Saturday. This Saturday's was a club theme. Grinning, Shannon told me her boyfriend had called her outfit a variation on the description of a mullet--business in the front, party in the back. "He says this is gangster up top, party on bottom," she said with a big laugh.

Gangsters, parties, theme days and costumes aside, there's no denying Shannon's gorgeous smile.

Larry, who is with The Nickelodeon, had another film about which he wanted to chat: "Bill Cunningham New York." I am more than a little excited to see that documentary, as you might imagine.

Since I'm having a lazing-around-in-my-heliotrope-pyjamas sort of Sunday, I rather liked the idea of adding this image of Lucas to my blog. Lucas was strolling up and down Main Street in this striking ensemble, and he appeared to be enjoying himself immensely. But then, as I've noted here previously, the young man has a distinct style. I caught up with Lucas at the Tapp's Building, where I also photographed these bonnets. Yes, you read that correctly. These are bonnets like the ones worn by Laura Ingalls and Holly Hobbie--if Ms. Hobbie wanted to give off the appearance of having her brains devoured by an alien, I suppose. The eyeballs are not lamps, but some kind of reflectors; the glow is my camera's flash bouncing back at me. I'd love to have one of these for Easter, wouldn't you?

I was chatting with an intriguing chap, a charming and brilliant linguist from the university, when we both noticed the young woman in this floor-length dress. I was drawn to the floral pattern and the cut of the shoulders. He was mesmerized by her hair. With his encouragement, I ventured forth to learn more.

Pa!ge (yes, that is how she spells it) was fascinating. She was fending off the evening's Easy-Bake-Oven-like heat with a richly-hued fan. She'd procured this particular fan from World Market, she told me, for about $5. A fan enthusiast (would that be a fan fan?), she likes to go to clubs to dance and finds a fan indispensable on those occasions. The authentic 1970s frock was purchased at Hip Wa Zee in Five Points.

Indeed, jazz remains timeless--and cool, no matter how high the temperature may be out of doors on any night. I dropped by Hunter-Gatherer last week and was promptly invited to join a table full of attractive, intelligent women. My luck can be rather good, I must say.

I could not prevent myself from talking shop, try though I might. Amanda was wearing an intriguing striped top--horizontal stripes on top, vertical on bottom--and had cinched it with a wide brown leather belt. She picked up the top, she told me, on a recent jaunt to Manhattan.

I was so keen to know what these two were laughing about that I very nearly missed out on a delight a little closer to home; it seems a darling young woman, a fellow Brit I've featured on this blog before, was seated right at my elbow. And at the table behind me, there were women in the most marvelous dresses. Had I not been intimidated by their beauty and style, I would have insisted they stand and pose for photos. But alas....I had only the courage to snap my fingers and try to gin up a bit of hepcat aura about myself.

After calling out to this woman repeatedly, I was at last able to get her attention--though admittedly, she was reluctant to make my acquaintance. I persevered, not because I am a glutton for humiliation, but because her dress reminded me of those I'd just seen in the movie Gidget. Millicent and I had happened to catch that movie on cable last weekend. Though I was a tad put off by the sartorial choices of The Big Kahuna (the chap in the straw hat in this photo), I found that Sandra Dee's wardrobe was positively inspired.

This dress, Gabrielle told me, is by Tracy Reese. It gets its flounce from a modest crinoline, certainly nothing as elaborate as the crinoline that saved the life of the Bristol barmaid Sarah Ann Henley.

Certainly, striped clothing is nothing new, but I have noticed a surge in the number of striped dresses and skirts this summer. Are the numbers sufficiently significant to rate a trend? My photographs from the Palmetto Tasty Tomato Festival seem to indicate the potential.

Worth noting, I think, is the great number of horizontally striped dresses. While men have always donned horizontal stripes willy-nilly, women have tended to shy away, cautioned by "experts" that horizontal lines might create some sort of unfavorable optical illusion. In my photos, I see no evidence of that at all. These women look lovely in their stripes, no?

Stripes have been known to communicate status. Prison uniforms in the U.S. were striped in the 19th century. In the Jane Austen era, a gentleman might wear a vertically striped vest while his manservant would be wearing a horizontally striped one, indicating their different stations in life.

Thank heavens we now have stripes going every which way, signifying nothing but a woman's desire to wear a bold dress, be comfortable, and have fun.

Indeed, during every summer I've spent in Columbia, I seem to lose my will to venture out of doors. Such has been the case these past two weeks, though thanks to my friend Millicent's suggestion, I am now freezing my bloomers and today, was sufficiently prepared to make a jaunt across town. While out and about, I was fortunate to encounter petite pretty Gina--who had elevated the standby tank top and jeans through her attention to detail. I loved how she had cuffed her skinny denim trousers just so.....

...then set the vibrant plum and blue ensemble off with elaborate earrings....

....and interesting sandals. Why, the chance to happen upon style such as this (plus frozen boxer shorts) is quite enough to get me out of the house, humidity be darned.

I was in Camden to see my pal Reidy, who informed me that the town now has a tequila lounge. Of course, I insisted we lunch there. We were sipping margaritas and exchanging insults in Spanish when this darling woman popped her head--and hat--over the booth to say hola. Indeed, I do not believe her name is Margarita. I fear that was the tequila talking.
