Patrick...Sewanee

Just back from a quick tour of Tennessee. I approached Patrick on the porch of Shenanigan's restaurant. Such a good sport about having his picture taken.

I'd like to begin a discussion about duck boots. Are duck boots usual attire in Sewanee? I'm truly interested. I only see Columbia men wearing duck boots when they are off to hunt. Or do Columbia men wear duck boots at other times as well? Dear readers, please enlighten me.

Nina Garcia hates duck boots...looks like she's still scarred by the Preppy Handbook experience...http://gawker.com/news/gawker-book-club/nina-garcia-hates-duck-boots-292698.php
Yes. Sewanee men (and women) wear LL Bean duck boots for many occasions. They are essential gear for lawn parties and tracking through beer muck in fraternity houses. Duck boots predominate over Wellingtons due to the reasonable fear one will look par venu (like wearing a newly minted Barbour) for sporting the latter.

Duck/gum shoes and boots seem to go with either A) wet or B) cold weather of the kind that Columbia doesn't get as much as Sewanee and Columbia has just that many more grown ups who would likely think they are an affectation in town. I am betting that any place with wet weather, countryside, and not much in the way of skyscrapers is a place where the tell-tale chain tread frequently appears.

I wear mine in the country, mostly. I like cowboy boots, but also have assorted other tall footwear, each with a purpose and happy memories.

The recent flooding of the Carolina Cup revealed vast hordes of parti-colored rain boots, which looked just right with sundresses. I expect Mr Bean's would have looked wrong by comparison, but plain green wellies would have been fine. No worry about them looking too new in that mess.
